This is a very special Hofner Congress Hollow-Body Archtop guitar in brown sunburst finish. The Hofner Congress was an affordable guitar available in the UK through the Selmer catalogue for 20 years between.
This guitar features a set-neck construction comprising a Laminated Maple body, Maple neck and 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard with matching bridge. Appointments include a Chrome ‘staircase’ tailpiece and open-geared tuning machines.
The Maple neck plays well, with a profile that could be described as a substantial ’D’ shape. The substantial neck profile provides a unique and characterful playing experience that is sure to inspire some fresh musical ideas. The Rosewood fingerboard is pleasant under the fingers, and with a highly practical 7.25” radius allows for smooth jazzy lines in all registers.
The acoustic tone of the Hofner Congress provides a more powerful bass response, and is certainly traditional sounding for a hollow-body ‘jazz box’. A clear mid range and bright treble response beautifully colours the overall sound of the instrument. This is a wonderfully preserved and highly playable instrument with a unique playing experience and tone.

Aesthetic Condition:
Headstock: Overall very good condition, the front face demonstrates consistent light scuffing and scratching, most notably surrounding the G string tuning post. The top edge demonstrates notable chipping/“burn” of the finish, revealing the wood beneath. Light indentation can be identified around the perimeter of the headstock, most notable to the top corners. The rear face demonstrates finish checking.
Neck: Overall very good condition, the rear of the neck demonstrates light scratching and indentation throughout the register. This occasionally pierces the finish and is somewhat discernible beneath the thumb. The fingerboard demonstrates light playwear throughout, difficult to discern against the natural grain.
Body: Overall very good condition, the front face demonstrates some light scratching where the bridge was placed incorrectly. Further very light scratching and indentation can be identified along the lower bout, visible only under direct lighting at certain angles. The treble side shoulder demonstrates a notable indentation chipping the finish and revealing the wood beneath. A slightly less notable marking can be identified to the bass side shoulder. The sides and rear demonstrate very consistent light scratching and scuffing, particularly towards the bottom edge.
Condition of Frets:
The frets demonstrate very light signs of use, not affecting playability. There is considerable material remaining for future fret work.
Current Set Up:
Truss Rod: Fully functional. Truss rod tool (8mm hex) not included.
Hardware: Fully functional with moderate signs of wear. Tuners stiff but function correctly.
Structural: This instrument would require a new bridge or neck reset to achieve a lower action.
